Matthew David Becker (b. 1984) holds a PhD in Composition from Western University (2018), earned under the guidance of Omar Daniel. While at Western, Matthew won the George Proctor Memorial Award in 2014, and an Ontario Graduate Scholarship in 2015. He was also one of five composers commissioned to write a new work for the Canada 150 Art Unveiling & Music Premiere event in November 2017.
In 2012, Matthew completed his MMus in Composition at the University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon, SK), under composer Gyula Csapó and, from 2009-2010, Malcolm Forsyth. Performances of critical works have taken place in Saskatoon (Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra) and Szombathely, Hungary (THReNSeMBLe).
Matthew’s compositions frequently include unique applications of rhythm, which often result in intricate counterpoint among horizontal or vertical sonic events. His research involves compositions for chamber ensembles, modern approaches to song, and electroacoustic processing.
